SASSA Means Test Calculator 2026: Will You Qualify?

Almost every SASSA grant has a means test — an income and asset check that decides whether you qualify financially. Enter your details below and this calculator will compare them against the 2026 thresholds for all 8 grants, in seconds.

Check Your Means Test

Estimate only — SASSA makes the final decision and verifies income against SARS, UIF and bank records. Thresholds change with the annual Budget — confirm at a SASSA office. Figures verified October 2026. We never ask for your ID number, OTP or banking PIN.

How the Means Test Works

SASSA compares your income — and for some grants, your assets — against fixed limits. If you are married, your spouse's income and assets are added to yours and the higher married limits apply. Fall under the limits and you pass the financial part of the application; go over and SASSA will decline you, even if you meet every other requirement.

The limits are set from the national Budget each year, so they can change every April. The calculator above uses the thresholds SASSA communicated for 2026, verified October 2026.

2026 Thresholds at a Glance

  • Older Persons, Disability & War Veterans: income under R9,350/month single (R18,700 married); assets under R1,584,000 single (R3,168,000 married).
  • Child Support: income under R5,800/month single (R11,600 married). No asset test.
  • Care Dependency: income under R24,000/month single (R48,000 married). No asset test.
  • Foster Child: no means test at all.
  • Grant-in-Aid: no separate test — you must already receive a qualifying grant.
  • SRD R370: income at or under R624/month, with SASSA checking bank deposits too.

Means Test FAQs

What counts as income for the SASSA means test?

Salary, wages, business income, rental income, interest and dividends, maintenance received, UIF benefits, private pensions and most other money coming in. SASSA cross-checks what you declare against SARS, UIF and bank records.

What counts as assets?

Investment property (not the home you live in), extra vehicles beyond one everyday car, savings, fixed deposits, shares and unit trusts, and retirement-fund balances. Your primary residence and the car you drive daily are excluded.

Does my spouse's income really count, even if we keep finances separate?

Yes. For the Older Persons, Disability and War Veterans grants, SASSA combines both spouses' income and assets and applies the higher married thresholds, regardless of how you arrange your finances.

Which grants have no means test?

The Foster Child Grant has no means test — the court order is the key requirement. Grant-in-Aid has no separate test because you must already be receiving a means-tested grant to qualify for it.

Why is the SRD test so much stricter?

SRD is meant for people with essentially no income — the limit is R624 per month, and SASSA monitors bank deposits monthly. A single deposit over R624 can cause a "means test failed" decline for that month. Our status meanings guide explains that decline reason.

I failed the means test. Can I appeal?

Yes — you have 90 days to appeal to the Department of Social Development. If your finances have genuinely changed, gather fresh proof (like 3 months of bank statements) and follow our SASSA appeal guide.

Final Thoughts

The means test is only one part of qualifying — age, citizenship, medical reports and documents all matter too. Use the calculator as a quick reality check before you travel to a SASSA office, then make sure your paperwork is in order with our document checklist. And remember: only SASSA can approve or decline your application.
