All SASSA statuses explained

Pending

SASSA is still verifying your application for that month — identity, income records and eligibility checks take time, often several weeks. Next step: check back weekly. If it’s been pending 2+ months, call 0800 60 10 11.

Approved

You qualified for that month. Payment follows in the SRD batch cycle during the last week of the month — there is no single fixed payday. Next step: watch the portal for your payday. See our payment dates guide for the batch windows.

Declined

SASSA found you didn’t qualify that month, and the portal shows a specific reason (alternative income identified, identity verification failed, NSFAS registration, etc.). Next step: read the reason carefully, gather evidence it’s wrong, and appeal within 90 days.

Referred

Your case needs an extra check — usually identity verification (eKYC) or document review. This is not a decline. Next step: log in to see what’s requested and complete it quickly; idle referred cases can stall. See our identity verification guide.

Bank details pending / verification failed

SASSA couldn’t verify your bank account — wrong number, closed account, or the account isn’t in your name. Next step: update your details at srd.sassa.gov.za. Our banking details guide covers the rules.

Cancelled

The application was cancelled — sometimes by the applicant, sometimes by the system. Next step: you can reapply at srd.sassa.gov.za. If you didn’t cancel it, contact SASSA first.

Statuses change every month

Your SRD status is reassessed monthly — approved in September doesn’t guarantee October. Check every month during the last week, when batches process.

FAQs

Why does my SASSA status say pending for so long?
Verification queues are long, especially after month-end. Two months of “pending” is frustrating but common. Beyond that, follow up actively.

Can my status change from declined to approved without an appeal?
No — a decline stands unless you appeal it successfully (or win at the tribunal). Re-checking the portal won’t change it.

What does “payday” with a date mean?
Your payment has been scheduled — the money is on its way for that date. Banks may take hours to reflect it; you don’t need to withdraw on the day.

Why did my status change from approved back to pending?
Each month is a fresh assessment. A new month’s verification may still be in progress while last month shows approved.
