SASSA Appeal Outcome Meanings — Approved, Declined & What Happens Next

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Your SASSA appeal can end in a few different outcomes. Here’s what each one means in plain language, when you’ll be paid if you won, and what to do if you lost.

Appeal approved — what happens next?

If your appeal is approved, SASSA has accepted that the original decline was wrong. What follows:

  • Payment: You will be paid for each month the appeal covered. Approved appeals are paid in the normal SRD batch cycles — expect payment in the last week of a month following approval (batches, not a fixed day).
  • Backpay: If your appeal covered multiple months, you should receive each approved month. Check your status monthly — months are processed individually.
  • No further action needed. Your application returns to the normal monthly reassessment cycle. You don’t reapply.

If 2–3 months pass after approval with no payment, call 0800 60 10 11 or visit a SASSA office — and double-check your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za, since failed bank verification is the most common payment blocker.

Appeal declined — what it means and your options

A declined (unsuccessful) appeal means SASSA reviewed your case and upheld the original decision. Common reasons: the means-test finding stood, identity verification failed, or supporting documents didn’t resolve the decline reason.

You still have one more avenue: the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). The tribunal is separate from SASSA and can overturn SASSA’s decision. See our tribunal guide for how to approach it.

Outcome table

Outcome Meaning Next step
Approved SASSA accepts the decline was wrong Wait for batch payment; check status monthly
Declined / unsuccessful SASSA upholds the decline Consider the Independent Tribunal
Pending Still under review (up to 90 days) Wait; follow up after 90 days
Referred Needs more info or verification Provide what’s asked promptly — delays stall your case

“Referred” — the outcome people misunderstand

Referred doesn’t mean declined. It usually means your case needs an extra check — often identity verification (eKYC) or a document review. Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za to see what’s requested, and complete it quickly: referred cases that sit idle can eventually be closed. If it’s an identity issue, our identity verification guide walks through the fix.

FAQs

How will I know my appeal outcome?
Check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID and cellphone number. SASSA does not reliably send SMS notifications for appeal outcomes — check manually.

If my appeal is approved, when do I get paid?
In the next available SRD batch cycle (last week of a month). Allow 1–2 months after the approval decision for the payment to process.

Can I appeal the same month twice?
No — one appeal per declined month. If that appeal is declined, your recourse is the Independent Tribunal, not a second SASSA appeal for the same month.

Does an approved appeal cover future months?
Your application re-enters monthly reassessment. Future months are evaluated on their own — an approved appeal for March doesn’t guarantee April.
