SASSA Document Checklist 2026: What to Bring to Your Appointment
The most common reason SASSA turns applicants away on their first visit is incomplete documents. Pick your grant type below and get a personalised, printable checklist of exactly what to take — so you only queue once.

How to Use This Checklist
Select your grant type and marital status, then hit the button. You'll get a tick-box list you can work through at home — and a print button so you can take it with you. The list is based on SASSA's published document requirements for each grant.
Two rules cover almost every SASSA visit: nothing older than 3 months (bank statements, payslips, proof of residence, medical reports) and originals plus certified copies of everything.
Why Documents Get People Sent Home
SASSA officials can't start your application without the full set. The most common trip-wasters are an expired medical report (disability and grant-in-aid need one under 3 months old), bank statements older than 3 months, and missing proof of marital status. A ten-minute check at home saves a full day in a queue.
Document FAQs
Do I need originals or copies?
Both. SASSA inspects the original and keeps a certified copy for your file. Get copies certified at a police station or post office before you go — it's free.
My bank statements are 4 months old. Will they be accepted?
No. Bank statements, payslips, proof of residence and medical reports must all be less than 3 months old. Ask your bank for a freshly certified statement.
What if I don't have a utility bill in my name?
A letter from your ward councillor confirming where you live is accepted as proof of residence.
Do I need documents for the SRD R370 grant?
Not in the same way — SRD applications happen online at srd.sassa.gov.za, so there's no office visit. You just need your ID number, a cellphone number in your name, and banking details. Our SRD application guide walks through it.
What happens if my application is declined?
SASSA must tell you why in writing, and you have 90 days to appeal. Our appeal guide covers the exact documents needed per decline reason.
Final Thoughts
Walking into a SASSA office with a complete, in-date file is the single fastest way to get approved without a second trip. Print your checklist, tick it off, and double-check the 3-month rule the night before. If you're unsure whether you qualify financially first, run our means test calculator.
