Need to update something on your SASSA profile? The most common reason updates fail is using the wrong channel for your grant type — SRD updates work online, but most permanent grant updates require an in-person office visit. This guide tells you exactly which update goes where, what you’ll need, and what you can’t change at all.

What You Can Update
There are four main things SASSA beneficiaries regularly need to update. Each has its own dedicated process — none of them share the same portal or the same steps.
Banking Details
If you’ve switched banks, your account was rejected, or you want to change from cash collection to a bank account (or vice versa), you need to update your banking details. For SRD R370 recipients, this is done online at srd.sassa.gov.za. For all other grant types (Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, etc.), banking updates require an in-person SASSA office visit. See our Change Banking Details guide for the full process, including which account types are accepted and which are rejected.
Phone Number
If you’ve lost your SIM, switched to a new number, or your original number no longer receives OTPs, your registered cellphone number needs updating. For SRD specifically, this is done online at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/mobile-number-update. The identity check method differs depending on your reason — “Lost phone” uses your bank’s last 4 digits, while other reasons use a face-scan. See our Change Phone Number guide for the exact steps and common error fixes.
Identity Verification (eKYC)
If your status shows “Identity Verification Failed,” “Awaiting Identity Verification,” or “Referred” — this isn’t a profile update in the traditional sense. It’s a specific verification step at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc. See our Identity Verification guide for the eKYC process, what each status means, and what to do if verification keeps failing.
Address / Proof of Residence
For permanent grants (Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, etc.), SASSA may require updated proof of residence during a periodic review or if your address has changed significantly. This update requires an in-person office visit — there is no online option for address updates. Bring a utility bill or official address confirmation not older than 3 months, along with your original ID document.
Online vs In-Person — Comparison Table
| Update Type | SRD R370 | Permanent Grants | What You Need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banking details | ✅ Online — srd.sassa.gov.za | 🏢 Office visit required | New account details, ID |
| Phone number | ✅ Online — srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/mobile-number-update | 🏢 Office visit required | ID, bank last 4 or face-scan |
| Identity verification | ✅ Online — srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc | 🏢 Office visit required | ID, camera for face-scan |
| Address / proof of residence | 🏢 Office visit required | 🏢 Office visit required | ID, proof of residence |
So, SRD R370 recipients can handle most updates online — but every permanent grant update (Older Persons, Disability, Child Support) requires visiting a SASSA office in person. Using the wrong channel is the most common reason updates fail.
What You Cannot Change
Some details are fixed in the SASSA system and cannot be updated, regardless of what you submit or who you ask:
- Your ID number — your 13-digit South African ID number is the permanent key identifier for your SASSA record. It cannot be changed under any circumstances.
- Your name as it appears on your ID — SASSA matches your name directly to your Home Affairs record. If your name changed (marriage, divorce, legal name change), you must update your Home Affairs record first — then SASSA’s system will eventually sync. You cannot ask SASSA to change a name independently of Home Affairs.
- Your grant type — if you’re receiving a Child Support Grant and want Disability instead, this requires a new, separate application for the new grant type. You can’t convert one grant into another.
- Backdated details — you cannot retroactively change the phone number or bank account that received payment in a past month. Updates only apply from the processing date forward.
What to Have Ready Before Updating
Gather these before starting any update to avoid having to stop mid-process:
- Your original South African ID document — required for every update, online or in-person. A copy is rarely accepted for sensitive profile changes.
- The cellphone number registered with SASSA — for online updates, OTPs go to this number. If this number no longer works, you must change the phone number first before you can do any other update.
- New details ready — for banking updates: your full new account number, branch code, and account type. For phone updates: the new 10-digit number in 0821234567 format (no spaces, no +27).
- Your last 4 bank account digits — needed for the “Lost phone” identity check route specifically.
- For office visits: proof of residence — a utility bill, bank statement, or municipal rate notice not older than 3 months showing your current address.
Tips for Updating Your SASSA Details
Fix your phone number first if it’s no longer working. Every other online update (banking details, eKYC) sends an OTP to your registered number. If that number is gone, the banking update form will be unreachable. Change your phone number first at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/mobile-number-update, wait up to 14 working days for it to process, then proceed with any other update.
Do one update at a time. Submitting multiple update requests simultaneously (e.g., phone number and banking in the same session) can cause system conflicts. Submit one, wait for confirmation, then submit the next.
Don’t update details right before payment date. Banking and phone number changes take time to propagate through SASSA’s systems. A change submitted on the 20th of the month may not be reflected before the end-of-month payment run. Update early in the month to be safe.
For office visits, avoid the first 10 days of the month. Payment-related foot traffic is highest right after grant payment dates. Visit mid-month (12th to 20th) for significantly shorter queues. See our Offices Near Me guide for more on timing.
Save your reference number after every submission. After any online update, write down or screenshot the reference number immediately. You’ll need it to follow up if the change doesn’t process within the expected window.

Final Thoughts
The golden rule: if you receive the SRD R370 grant, almost every update can be done online. If you receive a permanent grant, almost every update requires an office visit. Using the wrong channel wastes time and doesn’t actually process the change. For the detailed, step-by-step process for any specific update, see our dedicated guides: Change Banking Details, Change Phone Number, or Identity Verification.
