Your status shows “Approved” but no payment date is visible — or the date field says “null” or is simply blank. This is one of the most common SASSA anxiety triggers, and in most cases it means exactly nothing is wrong. This guide explains why it happens, when the date actually appears, and the specific cases where something genuinely does need fixing.

Why “Approved” Shows Without a Payment Date

Approval and payment are two completely separate steps in SASSA’s process. When your status shows “Approved,” it means SASSA has finished verifying your eligibility for that month — your income, UIF status, Home Affairs records, and bank details have all been checked and you’ve passed. But the payment scheduling step runs separately, in batches, and only happens during a specific window later in the month.

Think of it as two queues: the verification queue (which determines whether you qualify) and the payment queue (which determines when you actually get paid). “Approved” means you’ve cleared the first queue. The payment date appears once you’ve been assigned a slot in the second queue — and that only happens from around the 21st of the month onwards.

When Does the Payment Date Actually Appear?

SASSA assigns SRD R370 payment dates in batches during the last 7-10 days of each month — typically from around the 21st to the 24th, with the actual payment window running to the 30th or 31st. If you check your status before the 21st of the month and see “Approved” with no date, this is completely normal — the date simply hasn’t been assigned yet.

Once assigned, your payment date appears on the portal next to “Approved.” The sequence from there:

  1. Payment date appears on srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. SASSA sends an SMS confirming the date to your registered number
  3. Payment processes on that date
  4. Funds reflect in your bank account or become available at your collection point within 1–3 working days after the processing date

Tip: If it’s before the 21st and your status shows Approved with no date — close the browser and come back after the 21st. Checking repeatedly before then won’t make the date appear faster and won’t change anything.

“Approved” But the Date Says “Null” or Is Blank

“Null” is the technical placeholder the portal uses before a date has been assigned. It does not mean your payment was cancelled, declined, or removed. It means the payment scheduling batch hasn’t run for your ID yet.

This is particularly common:

  • In the first half of the month — before SASSA starts the payment batch run
  • When you’ve recently updated your banking details — SASSA re-verifies new banking details before assigning a payment date, which can add 7-14 working days
  • When SASSA’s portal is under high load — near payment dates the portal shows stale data; try checking at off-peak times (before 08:00 or after 20:00)

Approved With a Date But Money Hasn’t Arrived

If your status shows Approved with a date and that date has passed but funds haven’t landed:

  1. Allow 1-3 working days after the processing date — bank clearing cycles vary, and some banks (particularly smaller ones and Postbank) take an extra day or two
  2. Confirm your banking details are correct at srd.sassa.gov.za — a recent bank account change that hasn’t fully processed yet is the most common cause of an approved-but-unpaid situation. See our Banking Details guide for which accounts qualify and which get rejected
  3. If you collect at a retailer (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, etc.) — you cannot collect before the date shown. Trying before the date won’t work and is not a sign something’s wrong
  4. If 5 working days have passed after the date and still nothing — call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number and the payment date shown. Request a manual payment trace

When Something Is Actually Wrong

Most “Approved but no payment date” situations resolve on their own. These are the specific signals that indicate a genuine problem needing action:

  • It’s past the 31st of the month, Approved is still showing, and no date ever appeared — this is abnormal. Call 0800 60 10 11 or use WhatsApp (082 046 8553) to report it. This can happen if your banking verification flagged an issue after approval was granted
  • Your status changed from Approved (with a date) back to Pending or Declined — this occasionally happens when a late SARS or UIF data update changes your result after approval. If this happens mid-month, it’s worth calling SASSA to understand why
  • You received an SMS showing a payment date but the money never arrived, and it’s been more than 5 working days — request a manual payment trace at 0800 60 10 11. Bring the date shown in the SMS
  • You’re still using a Postbank Gold Card — your payment may process successfully but be inaccessible if the Gold Card isn’t working properly. Switch to the new Postbank Black Card before 31 August 2026 at any Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or USave

What Not to Do

  • Don’t reapply. Submitting a new application while your current month shows Approved creates a system conflict and won’t speed up your payment date
  • Don’t update your banking details unless they’ve actually changed. Re-entering the same details triggers a re-verification run and can delay the payment date by 7-14 working days
  • Don’t call 0800 60 10 11 before the 25th of the month if your status shows Approved — call centre agents cannot manually assign payment dates, and you’ll be told to wait for the batch run, which saves neither of you any time
  • Don’t trust WhatsApp groups or Facebook posts telling you to re-submit your application, share your OTP, or use a third-party site to “unlock” your payment date. These are scams

Tips

Check after the 21st, not before. Save yourself the anxiety — put a reminder in your phone for the 22nd or 23rd. Checking before that date will always show either Pending or Approved-with-no-date, because payment scheduling hasn’t started yet.

Use USSD instead of the website near payment dates. Between the 20th and the end of the month, srd.sassa.gov.za is under heavy load. Dial *120*3210# instead — it pulls from the same system and is almost always faster during peak periods.

Make sure your banking details are active and correct before the 15th. If you need to update your bank account, do it before the 15th to give SASSA’s re-verification process time to complete before the payment scheduling run begins. A banking detail change after the 20th is very likely to push your payment date to the following month.

Your SMS is the most reliable confirmation. SASSA sends an SMS to your registered number when your payment date is assigned. If you received an SMS with a date, that date is accurate even if the portal is showing stale data or loading slowly.

If it’s after the 28th and you still see “null” — escalate. This is past the normal batch window. Call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number and ask for a payment status update. Don’t wait until the month ends.

FAQs

  • My SASSA status says Approved but no payment date is showing — is something wrong? Usually not — payment dates are only assigned from around the 21st of the month. If it’s before then, wait and check again after the 21st.
  • What does “null” mean next to my payment date? It’s a technical placeholder meaning SASSA hasn’t assigned your date yet — not a cancellation or error.
  • When does SASSA assign payment dates? From around the 21st to 24th of each month, for payment processing running through to the 30th or 31st.
  • My status was Approved with a date but money hasn’t arrived — what do I do? Allow 1-3 working days after the date. If 5 working days have passed with nothing, call 0800 60 10 11 for a manual trace.
  • Can I speed up getting a payment date by calling SASSA? No — call centre agents cannot manually assign payment dates. The date appears automatically once SASSA’s batch processing reaches your application.
  • Should I reapply if I see Approved but no date? No — reapplying while Approved creates a conflict and won’t help.
  • My status changed from Approved back to Pending — why? A late data update from SARS, UIF, or your bank may have triggered a re-verification. Call 0800 60 10 11 to find out the specific reason.
  • I got an SMS with a payment date but nothing arrived — what now? Confirm your banking details are correct, then wait 5 working days. If still unpaid after that, call 0800 60 10 11 with the date shown in your SMS.
  • Does checking my status multiple times help get a payment date faster? No — checking more often doesn’t change anything. The date appears when SASSA’s batch run reaches your application, regardless of how many times you check.

Final Thoughts

In almost every case, “Approved but no payment date” means one of two things: either it’s before the 21st and the scheduling batch hasn’t started yet, or your banking details triggered a re-verification that needs a few extra days. Neither requires any action from you — just check again after the 21st using USSD (*120*3210#) if the website is slow, and wait for the SMS confirmation of your date.

The one situation that genuinely needs action: if the month has ended, your status showed Approved throughout, and you never received either a payment date or any funds. That’s the point to call 0800 60 10 11.
